Charles De Saxe, also known as Lord De Saxe of Trotiscliffe, was once the head of the Secret Service. Now retired, his life consists mainly of huntin', shootin' and fishin' - accompanied at all times by his faithful hound, Dorothy - until he unexpectedly offers to continue funding the ailing Acoustic Mirror project from his own pockets.

De Saxe's first actions are to install his friend Peter Vanguard as Chief Scientific Adviser, and to order the construction of several new Acoustic Mirrors on the Kent coast at Denge Marsh. But is he, as he insists, just doing his bit for King and country?
